The calculation people forget

Deciding between parking and a transfer, most people compare the parking fee to a one-way fare. That's the wrong comparison. The real one is:

• Long-stay parking for the full duration of your trip, plus
• Fuel both ways, plus
• The shuttle or walk from the car park with luggage, plus
• Driving yourself home after a red-eye or a long-haul arrival

…against a return transfer fare, booked as one job.

Where the line usually falls

As a rough rule, for trips of one to two nights, parking is normally cheaper and perfectly sensible. Somewhere around the four-to-seven-night mark the accumulated parking cost starts to close the gap on a return transfer, and beyond a week a transfer is frequently the cheaper option outright — before you've counted the convenience at all.

Check the current long-stay rate for your dates on Adelaide Airport's website, multiply it out, and compare it to the return fare we quote you. If parking wins, park — we'd rather you came back to us for the trip where it doesn't.

The things that don't show up in the price

Arriving home. Driving yourself after a red-eye, a long-haul flight or a delayed evening arrival is the part nobody factors in, and it's the part most likely to go wrong.

Your car sitting in a car park. For two weeks, in the open, at airport rates.

The luggage walk. From long-stay to the terminal, with cases and children, in July.

Delays. If your return flight is late, your car waits — but so does the parking meter. We track the flight and adjust at no cost.

When parking genuinely wins

You're going for one or two nights, you're travelling alone or as a couple with light luggage, you live somewhere a transfer would have to cover a long distance, and you're arriving back at a civilised hour. That's a perfectly good reason to drive yourself.

When a transfer wins clearly

Trips over a week. Families — because you'd need two cars or a car seat shuffle anyway. Early departures where nobody wants to drive at 4am. Late arrivals. Groups, where one vehicle replaces several cars. And anyone heading to or from the Barossa, Adelaide Hills or the Fleurieu, where the drive is long enough to be a real chore at either end.
